Personal loan lender, Karur Vysya Bank(KVB) has fixed a goal of reaching total business amounting to Rs 50,000 crore by the next fiscal, according to an official of the bank. The bank also plans to open 100 new branches and will shortly be applying for it, the official said further.

 

P T Kuppuswamy, MD and CEO of KVB said, “We will be applying to the RBI for 70-100 new branch licences in 2011-12″.

 

By this year-end the south based bank intends to have 375 branches functioning in the country. Also, the bank will be venturing into the north and western regions of the country, said Kuppuswamy.

 

The bank plans to reach business amounting to Rs 1,25,000 crore by 2016 which is also its centenary year. He added, “We plan to reach there gradually. In FY’11, we will touch Rs 42,000 crore and Rs 50,000 crore by 2011-12″.

 

The bank plans to increase its current and savings account deposits (CASA) by 2% to 26% in this fiscal, he added.

South African insurer Santam said on Monday half-year profit likely jumped by as much as 85%, helped by strong performance in its underwriting business, sending its shares higher.

Santam, the country’s biggest property and casualty insurer, said headline earnings per share for the six months to end-June likely rose by 75% to 85% from 284 cents in the same period a year earlier.

Headline earnings, the main profit gauge in South Africa, exclude some one-time items.

The company said it was helped by the absence of large industrial claims during the period. It said its investment portfolio, which was broadly in line with equity markets, would be helped by accounting factors.

South African insurers were hit hard by the economic downturn, as debt-burdened customers let insurance policies lapse and declining equity markets hit investment portfolios.

Unemployment and household debts remain high, even after Africa’s largest economy exited a recession last year.

Life insurer Liberty Holdings swung to a first-half profit last week, while two other South African life insurers, Sanlam and Metropolitan, gave upbeat outlooks for 2010. Read all…

The Oregon Public Health Division is working on legislation to enact a tax on sweetened beverages.    This would include many sodas and other sweetened drinks like Gatorade and ice tea drinks.  The cost of a half-cent per ounce would equal to be about 6-cents per soda bottle.   This beverage tax would generate over $160 million  for the State of Oregon Government.

The Health Division is advocating the proceeds be used for anti-obesity programs.     The proposal also comes at a time when Governor Kulongoski has announced that the state is $10.3 billion deficit over the next ten years.    Many product taxes start with a dedicated fund idea and then get diverted to pay for other programs.   This is the fear of every taxpayer who finds a continuing tax increase on more and more products.

Leading car loan lender, Union Bank of India intends to earmark a corpus of Rs 500 crore to help farmers in Andhra Pradesh. The bank is also targetting the Surat-Ganjam (Orrisa) corridor and the migrant laborers out there. It intends to offer mobile based savings accounts in the region.

  Union bank is targeting 32,000 villages which it plans to envelop in the next 3 years. The bank is estimated to add 6.2 million new clients during this period, thus boosting its client base to 10 million.

 

The bank is also testing offering finance to the associates of Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies (PACS) in Andhra Pradesh via Co-options Technologies Ltd (COTL).
